Brandon N. Thomas MS, MPH, RN

Brandon N. Thomas is a first-year PhD student at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing (FPB) at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, OH. After graduating from Case with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), she continued her education at the Ohio State University, in Columbus, OH. There she received her Master of Nursing (MSN) with the specialty of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Health Services Management and Policy.

Her research interests include vulnerable populations in general, but specifically African-American adolescent girls. She wants to study the psychological effects of self-esteem and body image as potential precursors to depressive symptoms in overweight and obese girls. Obesity has reached epidemic rates among children and adolescents and become a public health crisis, especially among ethnic minorities. Staying true to her public health background, she hopes to be able also to increase access to healthcare and health resources to this population via the establishment of a School Based Health Clinic, and develop culturally appropriate interventions to maintain mental and physical well-being throughout life.

She is currently clinical faculty in the Doctor of Nursing Program (DNP) and the BSN programs at FPB, where she teaches in Medical/Surgical Nursing, Pediatrics, Community Health, and Nursing Foundations clinical. She is also a core faculty member of the Discover Nursing Program, which aims to increase nursing opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, mainly African and Hispanic Americans within Case and the Greater Cleveland communities, to expand their insights to the variety of nursing career opportunities. She is a member and Fellow of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, a member of the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses, Ohio Nurses Association and the Greater Cleveland Nurses Association.
