Colleagues and Friends,

It is with deep and abiding sadness that we share with you the death of our beloved Mary Elizabeth Carnegie, DrPA, RN, FAAN. She died a quiet and peaceful death on Wednesday, February 20, at her home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The Final Rites for Dr. Carnegie will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008. Her body will be lying in state for public viewing from 9:00am-11:00am. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00am. This service will be held at the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel at Howard University which is located at Sixth Street and Howard Place, N.W., Washington, DC 20059.

The life and death of Dr. Carnegie is an overwhelming loss for all of us. It is also a door to self-transcendence and reflection. If we were to reflect on the long and well-lived life of Dr. Carnegie, we would see a beautiful and powerful woman who has taught us to become more loving, compassionate, and understanding of others and ourselves.

Dr. Mary Elizabeth Carnegie was a living legend. She was a symbol of knowledge, courage, and integrity throughout the world community. Her interest in the advancement of science and scholarship was embedded throughout her career, and it was an integral part of her daily life. She had the capacity to instill in others the desire to embody the relentless pursuit of excellence in research, scholarship, and practice.
