Howard University Division of Nursing Seeks Research Officer (5/3/04)


RESPONSIBILITIES
The Research Officer is responsible for the overall facilitation and management of research in the Division of Nursing and reports directly to the Associate Dean for Nursing. S/he has specific goals and activities negotiated annually with the Associate Dean, in addition to the following list of standing responsibilities:

Facilitates the development of a sustainable research infrastructure in the Division of Nursing.

Provides collegial assistance and guidance in the preparation of research proposals and in the implementation of funded research projects.

Manages the Division of Nursing research facilitation services through the development and implementation of policies and procedures and through supportive linkages.

Develops liaisons with support staff, including statistical, data management, and editorial services.

Guides faculty through the research application process and the University process for seeking off campus funding.

Offers a variety of ongoing training and mentoring opportunities for faculty and students in the cultivation and development of research expertise.

Creates and/or enhances opportunities to conduct disciplinary and interdisciplinary research among nursing faculty with a focus on reducing health disparities.

Seeks and communicates research funding opportunities to faculty, matching their interest with available resources.

Facilitates the development of undergraduate and graduate students to pursue careers as nurse scientists.

Maintains a data base of all research activity in the Division of Nursing and produces official reports and summary data, as requested.

Contacts and secures linkages with community based groups and resources that may support research initiatives of the Division of Nursing.

Develops and conducts own research program in his/her area of interest.

Serves on the Executive Committee and works is concert with the Yale-Howard Partnership Center for Reducing Health Disparities through Self and Family Management and any other research training programs that may emerge.

Seeks and secure external funding for continued growth and development of a sustainable research infrastructure in the Division of Nursing.

Serves on Division of Nursing committees and related University or College-wide committees, particularly research oriented committees.

Teaches in the graduate and/or undergraduate programs.

Cooperates with faculty staff in the planning and implementation of the Annual Carnegie Research Day.

Performs other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications
Must meet the criteria for appointment as an Associate Professor. Has an earned doctoral degree in Nursing or related field. Preparation and experience in research design, methodology, and data analysis. Demonstrated competence in the planning, conduct, and administration of research grants and activities. Record of success in securing external research funding, including support of research in own area of interest. Previous teaching experience in collegiate nursing programs. Record of scholarly publications. Excellent interpersonal and team building skills and positive experience in facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.
