Perceived Disrespect Jeopardizes Minority Patient Care (10/06/04)


Perceptions of disrespect are particularly prevalent among racial and ethnic minorities, say Janice Blanchard, M.D., and Nicole Lurie, M.D., in an article in the September issue of the Journal of Family Practice. In analyzing data from the 2001 Commonwealth Fund Health Care Quality Survey, the researchers found that members of minority groups, as well as non-native English speakers, were significantly more likely to report being treated unfairly because of race or language and more likely to feel they would have received better care had they belonged to another race. These patients were also more likely to put off needed care, less likely to follow doctors' advice, and less likely to receive optimal care for chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.
