APHA Supports Sullivan Commission’s Blueprint to Address the Nation’s Shortage of Minority Health Professionals (9/21/04)


ANA Member, Mary Maryland, PhD, RN, testified on behalf of ANA before the Sullivan Commission during a March 2004 meeting in Chicago, IL.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) supports the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Health Workforce’s recommendations for addressing the scarcity of minorities in the U.S. health work force, despite the nation’s growing diversity.

In its report, Missing Persons: Minorities in the Health Professions, the Sullivan Commission issued 37 recommendations to address the root causes of the nation’s underrepresentation of minority health professionals, including nurses, doctors and dentists. The Commission found that failure to reverse this trend could place the health of at least one-third of the nation’s citizens at risk as health care providers become further disconnected from the minority populations they serve.

New Grant Addresses Minority Nurse Shortage (9/20/04)
The Department of Nursing at Temple University's College of Health Professions recently secured funding from the Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to help local students who want to become nursing professionals. The $500,000 award will be used over the next three years to provide support to students from the North Philadelphia area entering into the first year of their nursing program.

Nursing professor Karen M. Schaefer, D.N.Sc., R.N hope that the "Developing Diverse Diamonds Project" (DDDP) will open doors for those whose "financial, academic and personal" circumstances limit their educational pursuits. Two full-time nursing faculty members will work with Schaefer to develop a set of "culturally sensitive activities" to supplement each student's current academic curriculum.
