ANA Networks at Scientific Conference in France

Science conferenceThe 23rd Annual Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc. brought together nursing faculty, health experts, researchers, and nursing students in Paris, France, June 9 – 14, 2010, to explore Nursing Education and Collaborations in an Indigenous Global Community.  Attendees were able to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and network with leaders from throughout the United States and the global community.

Representatives from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association were among the invited guests. MFP Fellow Beverly Patchell, PhDc., RN., a doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico, presented an abstract on “Indigenous Ways: How Traditions Guide Mental Health and Well-Being.”  One of the highlights of the Conference was a keynote address by John Lowe, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University and Vice Chair of the MFP National Advisory Committee and MFP Alum,  during the Awards Ceremony. Dr. Lowe inspired the audience with his presentation about “The Teen Intervention Project – Cherokee (TIP-C),” an intervention program being conducted at schools within the Cherokee Nation.  The program teaches self-reliance and HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among Cherokee adolescents.  ANA’s MFP Program Manager, Janet Jackson, staffed the MFP recruitment/retention display and disseminated more than 100 copies of the ANA/MFP recruitment/retention literature to conference attendees.
