Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the Clinical Research Pre-Doctoral Fellowship?

A. The Clinical Research Fellowship is an annual stipend based award that may be granted for three to five years. Extended funding throughout the three years is contingent on satisfactory academic progress. The MFP also facilitates the professional development through its Advisory Committee, network of MFP alumni, travel awards, dissertation support, and access to career development information and opportunities.

Q. How much money does the MFP award?

A. The annual stipend amounts vary from year to year depending on Federal allocations to the MFP. The minimum stipend is stipulated by the National Research Service Award and we adhere to those guidelines. For exact amounts for any given year, please contact the MFP office. We encourage universities to supplement the stipends with university assistantships, fellowships, and tuition waivers when necessary so that MFP Fellow support is consistent with the level of support other students in the same department receive.

Q. What is the length of the Fellowship?

A. The Fellowship is usually awarded for 10 to 12 months. A Fellow who wishes to receive continual awards for the maximum five (5) years must complete a progress report each year.

Q. Are Fellows obligated to repay funds awarded from the Clinical Research Fellowship?

A. No. In previous years, Fellows were required to repay in service hours.

Q. What criteria are used to select a Fellow?

A. Selection of a Fellow is based upon evidence submitted in the application in the following areas:

  • research potential
  • scholarship
  • writing ability
  • knowledge of broad issues in mental health nursing
  • professional commitment to ethnic minority concerns

Q. Who selects the fellowship recipients?

A. Recipients are selected by members of the MFP Advisory Committee.

Q. When are the decisions about the awards made?

A. This year the Advisory Committee will convene to select finalists in mid-June.

Q. May students not yet enrolled in a doctoral program apply?

A. Yes. However, students are encouraged to enroll into a doctoral program as early as possible. However, if you are selected for an award but are not admitted to a doctoral program by the time the funding year begins, you will not be eligible to receive the award.

Q. Does the MFP select schools for the applicant?

A. No. However, recommendations and/or suggestions can be made by MFP staff if assistance is requested.

Q. May I apply to more than one MFP Fellowship?

A. No. You may apply to only one.

Q. Is financial need a requirement for eligibility?

A. No.

Q. If I receive a Federally funded grant from another source, may I also accept funding from MFP?

A. No. Individuals currently supported by other Federal training awards are not eligible for support from this program at the same time they are receiving MFP support.

Q. What if other funding is from a private source?

A. Whether to award an MFP Fellowship to those funded by sources such as private foundations is decided on a person by person basis.
