SAMHSA MFP at ANA Co-Sponsors 5th Annual AAPINA Conference


More than 70 nurse leaders with the goal of advocating for the health and well being of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders came together during the 5th Annual Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association (AAPINA) Conference, May 22 – 24, 2008 at the Tuscany Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.

The conference theme, “Achieving Health Parity for Asians and Pacific Islanders through Practice, Research and Education,” objectives were to: (1)Identify the health care needs of Asian American Pacific Islanders; (2)Implement formulated strategies for acting on issues, legislation and public policies affecting the health of Asian Americans Pacific Islanders; (3) Collaborate with Asian American Pacific Islander health and professional organizations; and (4) support the health care and nursing concerns of Asian American and Pacific Islander nurses in the United States and its territories through active networking.

Keynote topics included Strategies to Support Minority Nurses: A Two-Way Street, presented by Carolyn Yucha, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean, University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Nursing; Developing Programs of Research: Different Settings, Different Perspectives by Cristina Esperat, PhD, RN, Professor and Associate Dean for Practice and Research, Texas Tech University, Haera Han, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, Johns Hopkins University, Oisaeng Hong, PhD, RN, Associate Professor, University of California, San Francisco; From Lab to Bedside: Evidence Based Practice in Nursing by Mary Bondmass, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Jennie Chin Hansen, RN, MS, FAAN, President-Elect of AARP, concluded with the closing address Divided We Fail: Using Research to Inform Policy.
