2007 MFP Intensive Winter Institute Held in Seattle
Transforming Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders Services was the theme for the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program’s 2007 Intensive Winter Institute, January 24 – 28, 2007 in Seattle, WA. The MFP were the guests of Mr. Ken Stark, Director of the Washington State Mental Health Transformation Project in the Governor’s Office. The Institute objectives were to:
1. Examine the Mental Health Transformation Program of the State of Washington from the perspective of theoretical models and planning, implementing, and evaluating mental health and substance abuse services through evidence-based research and practice.
2. Explicate programs of best practices and desired outcomes utilized in the State of Washington and examine the infrastructure that provides the base for these programs.
3. Utilize multiple regression and general linear model as major applied statistical analysis to mental health and substance abuse quantitative studies.
More than 20 Fellows and recent MFP graduates participated in the intensive four-day Institute. Faculty included:
- Doug Allen, BA, Director of the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) which funds and regulates alcohol/drug prevention and treatment services statewide in Washington;
- Faye A. Gary. EdD, RN, FAAN, MFP Executive Program Consultant/Director;
- Ezra C. Holston; PhD, MS, RN., Vice President for Research and Development at Hythiam, Inc.;
- Elizabeth Kohlenberg, PhD, Director of the Research and Data Analysis Division within the state Department of Social and Health Services;
- Antoinette Krupski, PhD, Research Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington and the Associate Director, Center for Healthcare Improvement for Addictions, Mental Illness and Medically Vulnerable Populations at Harbor view Hospital;
- Ken Stark, MBA, Med, nationally known for his expertise in substance abuse and is responsible for helping to manage a $304 million biennial budget regulating alcohol/drug prevention and treatment programs throughout the state of Washington;
- Hossein Yarandi, PhD, Professor of Statistics and Economics at Wayne State University; and
- Mayumi Willgerodt, PhD, MPH, RN, Assistant Professor in the School of Family and Child Nursing at the University of Washington.
