The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA) convened its 3rd Annual Intensive Summer Institute (ISI) on July 27 – 30, 2006 in Cleveland, OH. The focus of this intensive experience was on Scales of Measurement, Theory, Design, Data Analysis, and Interpretation. It was related to the acquisition of competence around the key elements needed to plan and conduct culturally-competent research that is aimed at addressing health disparities among ethnic minority people in the United States and the world community.
Faculty for the 3rd ISI included: Joyce Fitzpatrick, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean Emeritus, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University, and Editor, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, Applied Nursing Research, and Nursing Outlook; Faye A. Gary, EdD, RN, FAAN, Medical Mutual of Ohio Professor of Nursing for Vulnerable and At-Risk Persons at Case Western Reserve University and MFP Program Consultant/Director; Doris M. Hill, PhD, RN, Post Doctoral Fellow, School of Medicine, University of MN, Duluth; Ezra C. Holston, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor, University of California, Los Angeles, School of Nursing; and, Hossein N. Yarandi, PhD, Professor of Statistics and Economics at Wayne State University and MFP Statistician and Evaluator.
Monica Mickles, a doctoral student at Ohio State University School of Social Work, and La Tonya Noel, a doctoral candidate at the The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, also participated in the ISI and interdisciplinary experience. Each of them discussed their research in substance abuse and mental health disorders.
Fellows receiving incentive awards at the Institute included:
Rosa Gonzalez, MSN, MPH, RN, for “Most Committed.” Ms. Gonzalez is a second year doctoral student at the University of Miami. Her research focus is “Testing an Intervention Promoting Primary Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence among Latinos.

The “Most Overall Outcomes” Award was presented to Mayola Rowser, DNP, MSN, RN, CNS, a doctoral student at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. Dr. Rowser completed the Doctorate Nurse Practitioner (DNP) Degree in May 2005 and is expected to complete the PhD program in 2007. Moreover, she recently received a 1.2 million grant, as principle investigator, from the Health Resource Services Administration (HRSA) titled “Expansion of Medical and Mental Health Services to the Detainees at the Vanderburgh County Correction Facility in Evansville, IN.
Additionally, the MFP presented Hossein Yarandi, PhD with the “Outstanding Teacher” Award and the National MFP Advisory Committee presented MFP Program Consultant/Director, Faye A. Gary, EdD, RN, FAAN with the MFP Leadership Award. In the absence of the committee chair, Willa M. Doswell, PhD, RN, FAAN, Ezra C. Holston, PhD, RN and MFP alumni very eloquently presented the award noting that
"Throughout life, one interacts with many faces, people, and personalities with only a limited few making any significant contribution to one’s continuous development. Furthermore, very rarely do you have the indescribable pleasure of interacting with someone who is committed to you, superseding that person’s well-being. Without a moment’s hesitation, this person always offers a shoulder for you to rest your aching head, a helping hand to assist you over the insurmountable hurdles, and a litany of encouraging words to fortify one’s strength in self and capacity to reach desired objectives. This person is a beacon of hope, a bastion of endless possibilities, and an explosion of pioneering objectives. It gives me great pleasure today to recognize such a person who has invested personal time, tears, heart, and soul into the re-establishment and promulgation of this program using cogent ideas, pithy protocols, and visionary objectives to propel the MFP into a scholarly mechanism for the generation and progression of scientists. I am enormously pleased to recognize Dr. Faye A. Gary for being this rare person, a visionary leader for MFP. With that purpose, I would like to present her with the MFP Leadership Award."
One Fellow summed up the 3rd ISI best:
"It was great seeing everyone again and strengthening the professional support system called the MFP! It was also awesome meeting Ms. La Tonya Noel and Ms. Monica Mickles. I hope they had as much fun as I know we did hearing their cogent ideas and simply getting to know them for the power scientists that they will become. We laughed; we sang; we ate; we cried; and in the end, we renewed our ties. All in all, we simply fellowshipped; remembering that no matter what, we are a family."
Please save the date, the 4th Annual Intensive Summer Institute (ISI) is being planned for July 12 – 15, 2007.
