2006 SAMHSA Lonnie Mitchell HBCU Substance Abuse/Mental Health Conference

MFP Directors participated in a panel presentation during the dinner Plenary & Awards Ceremony at the 8th Annual SAMHSA Dr. Lonnie Mitchell Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Conference, April 7, 2006 in Washington, DC. The conference theme was "The Time is NOW: Moving the Issues of Substance Abuse and Mental Health to the Forefront of Society." The goal of this conference was to be a critical, regional and national forum for HBCUs designed to inform, educate, and stimulate students, researchers, and faculty on issues related to substance abuse and mental health.

Panelists included: Faye Gary, EdD, RN, FAAN, Executive Program Consultant to the MFP at the American Nurses Association; Aracelis Francis, PhD, Director, MFP at the Council on Social Work Education; Kim Knickerson, PhD, Director, MFP at the American Psychology Association; Dr. Aliya Jones, University of Maryland-Baltimore/Sheppart Pratt; Dr. Kermit Crawford, Boston University; and Ms. Christie Brannock, Lab Manager, NIH/NIDA. Other Program staff included Ms. Marilyn King, Senior Program Manager from the MFP at the American Psychiatric Association and Janet Jackson, MFP Program Manager, at the American Nurses Association. Each Association disseminated their program literature. The presentations were so well received that MFP directors have been invited to participate in another panel discussion during the 2007 conference.
