2nd Annual SAMHSA Intensive Summer Institute 2005, Cleveland, OH
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration’s (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA) hosted its Annual Intensive Summer Institute (ISI), August 4 – 7, 2005 at the Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, OH. The ISI was convened at the Iris and Burt Wolstein Research Building at the Health Sciences Center. For four days and evenings, fellows and Alumni focused on strengthening and expanding their research knowledge and expertise in quantitative research design and statistical methods within the context of research and practice in substance abuse and mental health disorders and prevention.
Joining the Fellows were SAMHSA Administrators and MFP supporters: Mr. Tom Edwards, Branch Chief for the Systems Improvement Branch of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), Dr. Wil Hardy, Senior Public Health Advisor for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), and Ms. Joyce Weddington, Senior Public Health Analyst in the department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), SAMHSA, and the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). They received standing ovations for their contributions.
ISI participants benefited from detailed lectures and discussions, work groups, homework assignments, open group discussions, one-on-one mentoring, and informal conversations with experts and peers throughout the duration of the Institute. Fellows also had an opportunity to present their own research. Importantly, they detailed their ten year research program, and linked their research and practice, present and future goals, to SAMHSA principles and priorities.
The responses from many of the Fellows and Alumni were reflective of the intensive and extensive magnitude of the ISI. Here are a few of their comments:
“The ISI was awesome.” “We need to meet more regularly – this is great!” “I want to become a nurse statistician – I can do this!”
“Thank you for selecting me as a SAMHSA MFP Fellow; this is one of the best things that have ever happened to me.”
“I enjoyed everything – the ride from the airport, the hotel is lovely, the Wolstein Building is world class, and even the bus ride was fun. I understand statistics, too!”
“I have a better understanding of how SAMHSA functions now, and it was great to have the SAMHSA Administrators with us; they were so knowledgeable and supportive of our program.”
