Minority Fellowship Program Events Held at ANA Convention (8/3/04)
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Fellows participated in several events at the ANA Convention, including a Micro-Mini Institute led by Dr. Jerome Taylor, a professor from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition, four Fellows presented their research during a plenary session, focusing on the Stigma of Mental Illness among Ethnic Minority Communities in America.
A Fellow from each of the ethnic minority groups presented, including African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian American and Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic Americans.
MFP Fellows also participated in a poster "Grand Rounds," in which five posters were displayed, with first prize being awarded in the research category to a poster by Fellows Margaret Wheatley and Ella Scott, doctoral students at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH.
The MFP Reception honored "Trailblazers" or individuals who helped to initiate and nurture the MFP during its 30 years of history and success. Honorees included Elizabeth Allen, M. Elizabeth Carnegie, Ruth Gordon, Hector Gonzalez, Mary Starke Harper, Martha Primaux, and Gloria Smith. Reception attendees included MFP Project Officer Dr. Paul Wohlford and ANA's President Barbara Blakeney and CEO Linda Stierle.
