Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN

Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, past president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), was honored on March 24 as keynote speaker at the national conference of the Minority Fellows Program (MFP) sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

An Alumna of the MFP and currently chief executive officer of the National League for Nursing, Malone told members of the nation’s core mental health professions that “there is no excellence without diversification,” and pointed to the MFP program as “a model” for diversifying the health care pipeline in the United States.

The SAMHSA conference, “Weaving the Tapestry of Health: Improving Behavioral Health in Diverse Populations through Science and Cultural Sensitivity,” brought together MFP fellows and officials representing ANA, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and the Council on Social Work Education.  ANA Minority Fellowship Program administers pre-doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships funded by SAMHSA.  Since its inception nearly three decades ago, the program has supported more than 266 ethnic minority nurse fellows in their pursuit of leadership positions in research, education, clinical practice, and public policy.

A panel on culturally competent treatment programs included Willa Doswell, PhD, RN, FAAN, chair of ANA’s MFP National Advisory Committee, on parish nurse interventions on underserved African American women.  Doswell is tenured associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.
