Lynette M. Gibson

Dr. Lynette M. Gibson (nee Richardson) is Distinguished Professor Emerita from the University of South Carolina. She retired as a Tenured Professor of Nursing and Director Nursing Research at the Mary Black School of Nursing (MBSON), University of South Carolina Upstate (USC Upstate), in 2021. Dr. Gibson also served as Associate Dean of the USC Upstate Greenville Campus. She earned the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Nursing Science and Certificate in Graduate Women’s Studies from the University of South Carolina (UofSC) in 2000. She graduated with a Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from Clemson University in 1988, specializing in Gerontological Nursing with a focus on the Nurse Educator role. She achieved her Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree, with honors, from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1982. Dr. Gibson taught for 30 years to nursing students at all levels: Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), BSN for Registered Nurses (RN-BSN), traditional BSN, and MSN. She has served as chair and member of numerous committees for doctoral students enrolled in Ph.D. and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs. Dr. Gibson served on numerous committees at the UofSC System and USC Upstate. At the system’s level, she served as a grant reviewer for the Magellan Scholars and Research Initiative for Summer Engagement (RISE) funding programs. At USC Upstate she served on the /Research Advisory Council, Editorial Board member of the “USC Upstate Student Research Journal”, Chair of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, Committee for Faculty Excellence, and MBSON Search and Peer Review Committees. She was also a member of several Search Committees including Chancellor, Senior Vice Chancellor/Provost, and Dean of the Library.

Dr. Gibson was awarded an ANA MFP Fellowship in 1997 and is a mentor of a current doctoral student fellow.  She has served as the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated ZHOPE (Zetas Helping Others Excel) Coordinator for the Southeast Region, Undergraduate Advisor for Chi Eta Phi Sorority at Clemson University, and Treasurer for the Southeastern Health Equity Council that was affiliated with the National Partnership for Action of the Office of Minority Health. She is currently a member of LiveWell Greenville At Worship, the Health Ministry and Soup Kitchen Ministry at Allen Temple African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, and the South Carolina Cancer Alliance.
