Marife C. Aczon-Armstrong, PhD, RN was awarded the 2009 Filipino Nurses Organization of Hawaii Excellence in Nursing Research Award during their 36th Annual Recognition Banquet at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, HI. She is slated to defend her dissertation, "Prevalence of Depression and Substance Use in Hawaii among Asian American and Pacific Islander Adults with Chronic Illness," in May 2010 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa`. Dr. Jillian Inouye, MFP Alumni and MFP National Advisory Committee member is her faculty advisor.
Lois Bolden, PhD, PMHCNS,BC: Article, "Predictors of Mental Health, Subjective Burden, and Rewards in Family Caregivers of Patients with Chronic Liver Disease," co-authored with Dr. Mona Newsome Wicks is published in Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, Volume 24, Issue 2, Pages 89-103 (April 2010).
Barbara Dahlen, PhDc, RN: Manuscript, "Giving Voice to Historical Trauma through Storytelling," has been accepted for poster presentation, April 27, 2010, during the Indian Health Service (IHS) 10th Annual Advances in Indian Health Conference, in Albuquerque, NM. Dr. John Lowe, MFP Alumni and Vice Chair of the MFP National Advisory Committee is her faculty advisor.
Eugenia Millender, MSN, RN, CCRN: Abstract, "Beliefs and Values that Influence Mammography Screening Behaviors in Spanish speaking Hispanic Women in Southeast FL: A Transcultural Caring Study," has been accepted for presentation along with Rosario Medina-Shepherd, PhD, APRN, FNP, BC during the 35th Annual Conference of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, July 22-24, in Washington, DC. Dr. John Lowe, MFP Alumni and Vice Chair of the MFP National Advisory Committee is her faculty advisor.
Beverly Patchell, PhDc, RN, MS, CNS: Abstract, "Modern Medicine, Old Traditions: Keeping the Fire Burning," has been accepted for poster presentation, April 27, 2010, during the Indian Health Service (IHS) 10th Annual Advances in Indian Health Conference in Albuquerque, NM. A second abstract, "Indigenous Ways: How Traditions Guide Mental Health and Well-Being" is slated for presentation at the 23rd Annual Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Inc., June 9 -13, 2010 in Paris, France. A third abstract, "Making Medicine: Cultural Tailoring of Substance Abuse Prevention Tools," has been accepted for presentation at the 39th Annual Meeting & National Health Conference, August 5 – 9, 2010, in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM.
Robert Pope, PhD, RN, MSN: Awarded the SAMHSA MFP Clinical Research Post-doctoral fellowship for FY 2009- 2010 at the University of California, San Francisco. His post-doctoral research focuses on Perceived Control and Psychosocial/Physiological Functioning in Substance Abusing Older African Americans. Margaret Wallhagen, PhD, Director of the John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at UCSF, is his faculty advisor and mentor. Dr. Pope is also the first author of an article, "The Social Determinants of Substance Abuse in African American Baby Boomers: Effects of Family, Media Images, and Environment," slated for publication in the June/July issue of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing. Moreover, Dr. Pope was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of Mental Health America (MHA). MHA is the "nation’s largest and oldest community-based network dedicated to helping all Americans live mentally-healthier lives."
Christina Wei, PhD, RN: Abstract, "Men Who Experienced Violence or Trauma as Children or Adolescents and Who Used Violence in Their Intimate Relationships’ has been accepted for publication in Issues in Mental Health Nursing. Dr. Wei has also been accepted for a two week training program, June 1-14, 2010, at the University of Texas, Houston including two years long distance mentoring with the expectation that she will write a NIH grant.
Cheryl Woods-Giscombe, PhD, RN: Article, "Superwoman Schema: African American Women’s Views on Stress, Strength, and Health," appears in the May 2010 issue of Qualitative Health Research Journal. Additionally, Dr. Woods-Giscombe passed the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric Mental Health Adult Nurse Practitioner exam in December 2009 and is now a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She practices at CAARE, Inc., a non- profit organization that provides free medical care to underserved groups. CAARE, Inc. has a substance abuse treatment program with funding from SAMHSA and Medicaid. Dr. Woods-Giscombe plans to work at site within her faculty role at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; eventually, she plans to explore community based participatory research funding to extend mental health services at this facility.
