Clinical Research Post-Doctoral Fellowship Application




The Fellowship addresses the priorities that are essential to ensuring that all people with substance abuse and mental health disorders will need to thrive and live a full life in the community. The fellowship will focus on the SAMHSA priorities that include:

  • Substance Abuse Treatment Capacity
  • Mental Health System Transformation
  • Prevention
  • Co-Occurring Disorders
  • Seclusion and Restraint
  • Children and Families
  • Disaster Readiness and Response
  • Homelessness
  • Suicide
  • Older Adults
  • HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis
  • Criminal and Juvenile Justice

The Fellowship Grant

  • The fellowship year includes a 12-month period with a stipend depending on years of experience.
  • Post-doctoral Fellows are expected to be on-site at the host institution.

Responsibilities of the Post-Doctoral Fellow

  • Full time study at the institution of choice;
  • Specific plans for the fellowship period/year to include your goals, objectives, and a timeline. This document must be signed by your mentor and or advisor of your program or the dean of the school/college of nursing before submission to the MFP staff;
  • Submission of annual progress reports that document progress in meeting goals, problems encountered and proposed resolutions;
  • A copy of the document must be signed by the mentor and or advisor of your program or the dean of the school/college of nursing before submission to the MFP staff;
  • Completion of a research project carried out independently with appropriate mentoring, or in conjunction with a larger project that is active in the institution of your choice;
  • Copies of all abstracts, manuscripts, papers, grants, projects that you created or assisted in developing during the fellowship;
  • Transcripts of all courses completed during the fellowship and course descriptions;
  • Copy of dissertation;
  • Attendance at an annual meeting of the MFP Fellows; and
  • Annual submission of a minimum of two manuscripts for publication in a scientific refereed journal

Eligibility

Applicants must have received their PhD degree within the past five years with a focus in substance abuse and mental health disorders. Their area of study must fit within the SAMHSA priorities and principles. In addition, all applicants must have an active license in nursing, hold degree(s) in nursing, and be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident.

  • List of degrees, dates of conferral, focus of study, and institutions
  • Current and permanent home address
  • Telephone numbers for home and business
  • Email addresses, and
  • List of publications

Other Required Documents

  • Two Letters of Recommendation, to be signed, sealed, and mailed by the recommended date to the SAMHSA MFP office at the American Nurses Association;
  • An official transcript mailed directly from the academic institution;
  • A five-page summary statement of the dissertation and the table of contents from the dissertation;
  • A three-page Plan for Research and Course Matriculation during the fellowship period with a timeline;
  • A delineation of the advantages of doing your research at the selected institution;
  • A list of other post-doctoral fellowship programs for which you have applied;
  • If applicable, the name and location of the continuing position from which you are taking leave to accept this fellowship.
